Fracking Protest

Added on by Carolyn Van Houten.

I shot my first protest the other day and it was quite an experience.  From the Raging Grannies singing to people sporting huge masks and chanting, I was visually overwhelmed.

SXSW Interactive Awards

Added on by Carolyn Van Houten.

I traveled to Austin, Texas this past weekend for the South By Southwest Interactive Awards.  SXSW is a film, interactive and music festival that is in its twentieth year.  This year it drew over 27,000 people from all over the world.

It was my first time in Texas and can I just say that I fell in love!  The people are great, the culture is fabulous (as are the tacos!), and the weather was beautiful.  The following are just a few iPhone photos I took during the few days I was there.

If you feel like it, check out our Living Galapagos project (www.livinggalapagos.org) which won the SXSW Student Interactive award.  UNC students are currently in the Galapagos Islands producing content for the project for the third time.  I can't wait to see what they come back with!

Krispy Kreme Challenge

Added on by Carolyn Van Houten.

The Krispy Kreme Challenge's mantra is "2400 calories, 12 doughnuts, 5 miles, 1 hour."  Each of the 8,000 racers were expected to eat a dozen donuts halfway through the 5 mile race that benefits the North Carolina Children's Hospital as well as several other charities.  It was a crazy whirlwind to photograph, but here are a few of my favorite moments from the hour!

Dance Marathon, for the kids.

Added on by Carolyn Van Houten.

Each year UNC students gather in Fetzer Gym to dance for 24 hours in order to raise money for children's charities.  Since 1999, $3.3 million dollars have been raised.  I have many good friends who have become integral parts of the event and I am so proud of and impressed by them.

The article is here and the first look gallery is here.
